Takht-e Foulad is an 800-yearold historical cemetery in Isfahan. During the Safavid era only prominent figures and authorities were buried there but the cemetery later became a public graveyard. The cemetery is the eternal resting place of countless constitutional revolution Bakhtiari and Qajar figures as well as poets, philosophers, religious scholars, satirists, calligraphers and mystics. Two of the famous Iranian women interred in the cemetery are Commander Maryam Bakhtiari and 20th century jurisprudent and theologian Lady Amin. Takht-e Foulad is a National Heritage Site.
Takht-e- Foulad as one of the oldest and most sacred cemeteries and the Islamic World, such as spiritual space and the multiplicity of celebrities buried in it, historic and ancientness of site, a place to find roots, place for historical, cultural, artistic and sociological studies, variety of architectural styles of mausoleum and other forms of art, such as calligraphy, painting, carvings and etc.
In the south east of Isfahan, there lays one of the oldest historic cemetery of Islamic world. Namely, this cemetery is one of the holiest among Al-Baaghi in Medina, Abotaleb in Mecca, and Wadi-Salaam in Najaf. This graveyard is known to be a pre-Islamic one since the tomb of Yusha, (who may be the Biblical Joshua), the Jewish prophet, is laid there.
The advent of this cemetery is not clear, but the existing evidence connects it to the pre-Islamic period. A great number of buried celebrities, and valuable historical monuments have made this graveyard as an important cultural and historical site. It had been a gathering place for Dervishes to celebrate their ceremonies before Safavid dynasty. A Khanqah was also constructed in the cemetery and was known as Baba Rokneddin. During Safavid dynasty, a caravanserai was constructed beside this cemetery which was the last residential place for the caravans entering Isfahan from the south. Takht-e Foulad was specially designed for burring the authorities during Safavid period, but it became a public cemetery afterward. Takht-e Foulad is a treasure with various artistic works, including architecture, gilding, tile, calligraphy, carving, poetry, painting and drawing from different periods in Isfahan.
